One of Australia’s most enduringly popular musicians presents a fresh new take on some of the world’s most famous music: Jane Rutter plays The Four Seasons.
Originally written for solo violin, Vivaldi’s dynamic, vivid portrait of the moods and activities of the seasons was one of the most innovative works of its day, and has continued to thrill audiences ever since. From the joyful birds of Spring to the thrill of the hunt in Autumn, this is music at its most descriptive, engaging and beautiful.
Rutter remains faithful to Vivaldi’s original, but also introduces new sounds and textures which just aren’t possible on the violin. The result is a performance which brings out the stunning colour of the music. “In France,” she writes in her introduction to the album, “musicians often declare: ‘Artists / painters paint with sound, musicians play with colour.’ This is surely the perfect piece to convey that notion.”
This recording of The Four Seasons on the flute follows in the footsteps of Rutter’s mentor, the inspirational French flute virtuoso Jean-Pierre Rampal, who recorded the works over 20 years ago.
Also featuring on this album are two of Vivaldi’s best-loved flute concertos: the delightful “Goldfinch” and the haunting “Night”. Rutter is accompanied by an orchestra of some of Australia’s finest baroque musicians. The result: an album that will transport you into a world of imagination and beauty.
